We are thrilled to share the results of our third study on how to start web applications in 2024!

Over the past few years, our studies on web app development in 2022 and 2023 have garnered significant attention and citations. This year, we have continued our research to capture the latest trends and dynamics in web application development.

2024 marked a milestone with the highest number of participants in our research, with 508 unique responses. Our focus in 2024 continues to be on identifying how web applications are started, with an added emphasis on the evolution of AI integration into the development process. This year, we also collected information on respondents’ roles, allowing us to understand web development patterns based on whether the respondent is an engineer, decision maker, or other role.

Below, you’ll find an in-depth exploration of the technologies, frameworks, tools, platforms, and specific patterns respondents follow to build web applications in 2024.

The survey was conducted between April and June 2024. 508 respondents from 33 countries participated.

Key findings highlighted:

• The number of users who prefer building web apps by writing code dropped from 65.97% in 2022 to 36.02% in 2024
• AI has become integral to the web development process, with 63% of respondents already incorporating AI tools like ChatGPT into their workflows, compared to 50% last year.
• WordPress (29.3%) and FlutterFlow (16.5%) are the most commonly used no-code/low-code solutions.
• Most respondents prefer visual drag-and-drop builders (52%) over text-to-app generators (27%), though it is the first year we do the measurement.
• React is an unbeatable leader among a new generation of engineers.
• More than 66% of respondents prefer to learn code from online resources, especially through talking to AI (22.6%) and online resources. Only 27.4% prefer to learn web development resorting to classical offline methods.

Free Version Of An Application Generation Technology Via An Open-Source GitHub Repository

We also wanted to introduce a free version of an application generation technology via an open-source GitHub repository. This repository houses a collection of Ruby ERB (Embedded Ruby) templates, which serve as the foundational scaffolding for web applications generated by the Flatlogic platform. Users can define their application specifications on the Flatlogic platform through a UI interface or AI-driven dialogue. This results in a detailed JSON object that encapsulates all application parameters and configurations.

The transformation from JSON to a web application is facilitated by the Flatlogic Generator, which utilizes the ERB templates stored in the GitHub repository. This process involves mapping the JSON-defined parameters and configurations to the corresponding ERB templates, dynamically generating the source code required to build the web application. The generator automates the conversion of ERB files into a fully functional web application, tailored to the specifications defined in the JSON.

To support the free/community version, Flatlogic commits to maintaining the open-source template repository, encouraging contributions from both the company’s developers and the broader developer community. This collaborative approach ensures the repository evolves, incorporating new features, bug fixes, and enhancements. Previously, the default data display was a table. Now we’re giving users the power to view their data how they want. This includes the new options of a list, card, and uniquely, a calendar view. These options give users the freedom to customize and control the presentation of their project according to their specific needs and requirements.

This incredibly user-friendly feature can be selected directly from the convenient Schema Editor. Alternatively, users can specify their preferred display type in the description when creating their new project. For example, if a user requests that a particular entity be displayed as a card, the system will pre-select this option when creating the project schema.

List View

Optimized for sequential data display, List View facilitates efficient linear analysis of data set elements. This view is particularly effective for straightforwardly displaying records, allowing you to quickly scan and retrieve information without the visual complexity of other data arrangements.

Card View

Designed to present data in a visually appealing way, Card View organizes information into individual cards. Each card serves as a container for a single piece of data, presenting it in a more detailed and visually appealing way than a simple list. This view is particularly effective in scenarios where the data benefits from a richer context, or where individual records contain multiple attributes that are best understood when presented together. It’s ideal for user interfaces that emphasize intuitive navigation and interaction, providing an at-a-glance summary with the ability to drill down into the details of each element.

Calendar View

Designed specifically for managing and visualizing time-sensitive data, the Calendar view provides a dynamic temporal view of events, tasks, or any date-related data point. It requires the specification of date or date/time fields within the record to activate. Critical for applications that require scheduling, event management, or any form of date-based data tracking, this view gives users a comprehensive view of their time-sensitive data in a familiar calendar format.

Among the new display types, the Calendar option requires additional customization. This display type becomes available as an option when two or more fields in the current entity are marked as date or datetime types. Once the Calendar option is selected, two additional drop-down menus prompt the user to specify the start and end date fields.

Now you can feel free to innovate and experiment confidently, knowing you can always start over with a clean slate if needed. Embrace the freedom to create without fear of permanent changes.
